Farmer tries to end life over Indiramma housing scheme
Kummari Nageshwar Rao attempted suicide in Mulugu district after being excluded from the Indiramma housing beneficiaries list, raising serious concerns
Hyderabad: In a distressing incident at a Gram Sabha in Buttayigudem, Kannaigudem mandal of Mulugu district, a small-scale farmer, Kummari Nageshwar Rao, made a suicide attempt in full view of the public on Thursday.
Disheartened with his name missing from the list of beneficiaries for whom Indiramma houses were allotted, he protested with the village committee before resorting to the drastic step. Officials quickly shifted Nageshwar Rao to the Eturunagaram hospital for treatment.
Later, he was shifted to the district headquarters hospital in Mulugu for better medical care. Nageshwar Rao had argued with the officials accusing them of favouring Congress members for government schemes.
Congress leader’s shocking declaration
Meanwhile, in Nalgonda, the public was taken aback by the open declaration of a Congress leader that the Indiramma houses would be given to only those selected by the Congress.
“You voted for a price, and in what way would you merit consideration for benefits under the Congress government-sponsored welfare schemes?”
This was the intriguing question posed to the denizens of Mallapuram village in Yadagirigutta by Indiramma committee member and Congress leader M. Satyanarayana. He accused a section of the villagers of selling their votes for money during the last assembly and parliamentary polls and made it clear that the Indiramma houses would be the exclusive right of Congress functionaries and would be allocated to whomever the Congress desired.
The Gram sabha held this morning witnessed heated discussions. The officials faced a volley of questions over the mode of selection of beneficiaries for the Indiramma houses.
Intervening at this stage, the Congress leader took over the microphone from the officials to announce that no one was supposed to question the allotment of houses made by the committee.
The meeting, intended to announce the names of eligible beneficiaries, quickly turned contentious as villagers grilled the officials.
The villagers, particularly agricultural labourers, also opposed the benefits being extended under the Rs.12,000 per year cash scheme to those owning land.
Former sarpanch Karra Venkataiah of the BRS condemned the Congress leaders’ arbitrary actions and emphasized that welfare schemes should be distributed fairly to all eligible individuals.
He warned that the villagers would not remain silent if the schemes were not allocated justly and hinted at repercussions for the Congress party in the upcoming local elections.
In Bibi Nagar town, similar scenes were witnessed as Congress workers disrupted the gram sabha, preventing the reading of the draft list.
The workers expressed anger over the limited number of ration card beneficiaries, questioning how only 300 people could be included.
Meanwhile, in the 26th ward of Suryapet district, residents expressed frustration as many application forms submitted seeking benefits under welfare schemes were found missing.
Despite having applied duly, their names were missing from the list, and they were not provided with receipts for new applications.
