Financial crisis drives farmer to end life in Nirmal
Kunta Sub-Inspector Bhaskara Chary reported that Neralla Lakshman took the extreme step after failing to secure profits in farming. Lakshman had cultivated soybeans on his 2-acre land, but the crop was damaged by monsoon floods. The resulting financial crisis, combined with delays in government assistance through Rythu Bharosa and difficulties in obtaining loans to plant maize, left him deeply distressed.
Nirmal: A 38-year-old farmer died, allegedly by suicide, as he was depressed by a financial crisis caused by crop damage at Suryapur village in Kuntala mandal on Thursday.
Kunta Sub-Inspector Bhaskara Chary said that Neralla Lakshman resorted to the extreme step when he could not register profits in farming. Lakshman raised soya crop in his 2 acres of land. However, the crop was damaged by the floods in this monsoon. He was depressed by the financial crisis caused by crop damage and delay in extending Rythu Bharosa by the government. He was also struggling to get loans to sow a maize crop. He also grows various crops by renting around 10 acres of land, locals said.
The farmer is survived by his wife, a daughter and two sons.
Based on a complaint received from Lakshman’s wife, a case was registered. Investigations were taken up.
