Warangal: An FIR was registered against the NIT Warangal chief warden for alleged cruelty towards stray dogs, following a complaint by animal welfare activists.
Cruelty prevention manager at the NGO Stray Animal Foundation of India (SAFI), Adulapuram Goutham, lodged a complaint with Kazipet police alleging that the chief warden, Abdul Azeem, hired a dog-catching team and a vehicle to relocate stray dogs in the NITW campus.
The canines were subjected to grievous hurt and extreme physical pain as they were caught using metal wires and dragged into vehicles in an inhumane manner. After timely intervention by a few animal welfare activists, the illegal relocation was stopped, but the canines had already suffered, Goutham said in his complaint.
Kazipet SI V Lavan Kumar registered the FIR under Sections 325 read with 62 of BNS along with Section 11 (1) (A) of The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (PCAA) against Azeem and the dog-catching team for their alleged attempt to maim the dogs.
Goutham informed that yet another incident of killing stray dogs using poisonous injections came to light at Pathipaka village of Shayampet mandal in the district. A complaint in connection with the incident was lodged with the local police on Monday.
As many as 200 stray dogs were killed some 45 days ago at the orders of the gram panchayat secretary prior to gram panchayat elections. Goutham said he, along with SAFI volunteers Moola Rajani, Elaprolu Anitha and Elaprolu Keerthika, visited the spot where the killed canines were buried.
The local police also visited the spot and confirmed the mass burial of the killed stray dogs. A post-mortem will be conducted on Tuesday by veterinary doctors at the burial site to confirm the cause of death, he said. It may be noted that similar incidents took place in different villages in Shayampet mandal after the gram panchayat polls.
