Hyderabad: The slow pace of underground drainage works at the Gandi Maisamma junction, ongoing for the past five months, is causing severe traffic congestion, leading to persistent delays and long queues for commuters.
With the work remaining unfinished, vehicles crawl through the junction, leaving commuters to face significant delays, especially during peak hours.
The drainage works at the Gandi Maisamma area, which falls under the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC), began ahead of the summer season and were supposed to be completed within three months. However, the schedule was disrupted due to a host of reasons, forcing authorities to push back the completion period by another two months.
The width of the main road connecting Balanagar, Jeedimetla, and Suraram to Gandi Maisamma junction has been reduced, as the dug-up spoil for the underground drainage work has been dumped along the roadside.
As a result, engineering college buses, daily commuters, TGSRTC buses, and goods vehicles are frequently being held up in traffic during peak hours.
Similar work near the junction is also continuing at another point towards Bachupally, Nizampet, and Miyapur. There, the excavated earth has been piled high, resembling a small hill.
Commuters using this junction to travel towards Nizampet, Miyapur, and Gachibowli (IT Corridor) are experiencing major traffic jams at the spot.
With works related to the underground drainage taking a long time to finish, commuters are getting annoyed. On multiple occasions, they have complained about delays and heavy congestion at peak times, as vehicles kept accumulating near the work area.
“Recent rains added to traffic woes at this junction. Rainwater stagnated due to ongoing works and covered almost 50 per cent of the road, which was caught in traffic jams. Importantly, traffic cops were absent at this junction to regulate traffic,” a few commuters told ‘Telangana Today ‘.
The Deputy Commissioner, CMC, Karan said, “The underground drainage work has been completed, and by tonight, the road junction work will be completed and restore traffic normalcy.”
Gandi Maisamma area has developed into one of the most rapidly expanding educational hubs in the suburbs of Hyderabad city. The locality accommodates multiple well-known engineering colleges along with hundreds of housing projects.
