Heavy rain causes severe traffic chaos in Hyderabad’s IT Corridor

Hyderabad: Several commuters across the city, particularly in the IT corridor, had endured another difficult evening earlier this Monday, as moderate to heavy rains coincided with peak traffic hours, leading to severe congestion, waterlogging and longer travel times.
Several areas along the IT corridor stretch, including Madhapur, Hitec City, Gachibowli, Kondapur and Financial District, had witnessed slow-moving traffic with people heading home and parents rushing to pick up children from schools.
At key junctions, bottleneck traffic was observed, with vehicles literally crawling through waterlogged roads and overflowing drains. An otherwise comfortable drive of 15 to 20 minutes through these road stretches turned into a harrowing experience stretching to an hour or more as water inundated the roads.
Meanwhile, what has become increasingly noticeable this monsoon season is the timing of the rainfall. A majority of recent showers have occurred during late afternoon and evening hours when the vehicular traffic is at the highest.
Though Traffic Police authorities have maintained that all necessary measures were being taken to handle the situation, heavy rainfall during rush hours continues to expose vulnerabilities in traffic management and drainage networks in the Cyberabad region.
Many commuters have called for the need for better rain preparedness, drainage maintenance, and coordinated traffic management during the forthcoming monsoon months.
