Hyderabad: While there is always a question about the education system in India and its role in moulding students to cope with the practical world outside, two teenagers, Aniket Gupta (19) and Seher Taneja (16), took it upon them to bring about a change and encourage youngsters into choosing unusual careers.
With an idea to promote youngsters to think out of the box and turn them into possible entrepreneurs dedicated for a social change, the two teenagers spearheaded their own non-profit organisation called ‘The Tale of Humankind’.
“We observed that choosing a mainstream career like engineering, law, or science, helps one have a clear course of action on how to progress in life. But when it comes to entrepreneurship, there is no such guidance and many are scared to choose careers away from the mainstream. So, we want to show youngsters how they can turn something that requires to be changed in the society into a business opportunity,” shares Aniket Gupta.
Any social or environmental problem can be turned into an opportunity and into a business focused towards change, says Aniket. “A young boy with his team is now turning waste flowers into fragrance sticks (agarbatti). With this business, the young lad is saving so much waste from being dumped at the dump yard and is turning it into a usable thing. Such simple ideas can be turned into feasible change making businesses,” he says.
Youth summits
To promote the idea of making a difference, Aniket and his team have formulated events like Youth Summits where several prominent young change makers share their stories while inspiring many others to think out of the box. The Youth Summit 2021 also had Dr Andrew Fleming, British Deputy High Commissioner, UK in Hyderabad, encouraging the younger generations towards building a more sustainable, eco-friendly and socially liveable country. In addition, The Tale of Humankind team also hosts competitions like filmmaking and storytelling twice a year to encourage ideas around change making in society.
Change Makers Awards
The Tale of Humankind team has introduced the first edition of Change Makers Awards to acknowledge and applaud the efforts of young advocates of change working towards making this world a better place.
“We usually see elders getting awards for their achievements. Although it motivates us to be a better version of ourselves, the effect is doubled when it is a fellow youngster receiving an award. And so we want to bring all creative change makers in different parts from around India on one platform to encourage them and many other youngsters,” Aniket says.
