Hyderabad: In a major crackdown on illegal online betting promotions, the Hyderabad Cybercrime officials have identified and taken down 124 social media profiles that were allegedly running hundreds of advertisements promoting betting and gaming platforms.
Cybercrime officials said that during the past month, continuous digital surveillance and intelligence-based tracking had led to the detection of 539 paid advertisements across multiple social media platforms.
“These ads promoted online betting and gaming applications and were aimed at users in India, particularly targeting youth by promising easy money, bonuses and referral commissions,” said a senior official from the Cybercrime Wing.
According to the police, the profiles circulated promotional posts, referral links and inducement-based schemes to lure people into participating in unlawful wagering activities. Acting on the findings, officials reported the accounts to the platforms, following which all profiles were taken down to stop further spread of such content.
