Hyderabad: Cybercrime officials in Hyderabad have nabbed a key suspect in a major matrimonial and cryptocurrency investment fraud case at the Chennai airport.
The suspect, P Prasanna Kumar (32), is a native of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
According to the police, the suspect had travelled to Cambodia in 2024 in search of overseas employment but later joined organised cyber fraud networks targeting Indian nationals. Subsequently, he procured hundreds of illegal SIM cards to create fake matrimonial and social media profiles, impersonating women to trap victims with promises of marriage and high investment returns.
He was involved in a case in which a man from the city lodged a complaint stating that he was befriended by a woman on a matrimonial platform. Claiming to be a UK-based engineer, she allegedly built emotional trust before luring him into investing in a fake cryptocurrency trading platform.
The victim was initially shown fake profits and later persuaded to invest larger amounts through USDT transactions. When he attempted to withdraw the displayed balance of over Rs 12 lakh, he was pressured to invest more. He ended up losing Rs 11.1 lakh.
He approached the Cybercrime police, who traced and nabbed the suspect on February 24.
