Hyderabad: Hyderabad is not only a priority but a strategic market for the smartphone maker Oppo, which set up its first-ever R&D centre outside of China, playing a pivotal role in developing 5G technologies and making the city its innovation hub for the India market.
With the setup of the first 5G innovation lab at Hyderabad R&D Centre, the company aims to elevate the global 5G experience and strengthen the overall ecosystem. The lab is focused on deepening the development of core product technologies for the 5G ecosystem and accelerating its rollout in India.
“We recently announced the set-up of a specialised lab for Camera innovation at Hyderabad R&D Centre. The lab is designed to develop localised features, camera solutions using artificial intelligence (AI) and focus on developing imaging software for a better user experience. We are determined to push AI capabilities to bring high-end videography innovation to the users,” Damyant Singh Khanoria, CMO, Oppo India, told Telangana Today, in an exclusive interview.
To strengthen the company’s focus on Camera technology, Oppo’s India team has already filed over 125 patents in this domain, and out of these more than 50 per cent are into AI in Camera.
After-sales network
Oppo has built a network of retailers and distributors across India. With over 60,000 sales points, the brand aims to further strengthen customer experience and showcase its products.
In line with its customer-first strategy and building on Oppo’s service network, the company has planned to strengthen its service centre network to over 600 stores by 2022. “Currently, in Telangana we have about 19 service centres to cater to our customers. And overall, the brand has over 500 service centres spread across India,” Khanoria informed.
Omnichannel strategy
“With digitisation being the need of the hour, businesses are looking for different ways to stand tall in the ever-evolving online market. Oppo launched its own e-store, a one-stop-shop platform for consumers to access over 80 products ranging from smartphones, internet of things (IoT) gadgets to wearables. Furthermore, to strengthen the omnichannel strategy and to support local store and mainline partners to sell, Oppo enabled a home delivery of products through WhatsApp,” he added.
Oppo India has also introduced a dedicated AI-powered chatbot called ‘Ollie’ that is available 24X7 for consumers to resolve queries. Online and offline channels have equally helped the smartphone market boom in the past couple of years.
However, the rise in disposable income of consumers has given a new direction to the shopping habits of consumers due to which the e-commerce channels and platforms have seen exponential growth, which has helped Oppo reach out to the broader market, he noted.
Localised solutions
Khanoria added, “Many short-term challenges brought by the pandemic still exist for us and others in the industry. As of now, we are focused on developing localised solutions especially for the Indian market and we want to ensure that Indian consumers should get the best network experience.”
To this end, Oppo is investing heavily on gathering consumer insights and working towards building consumer centric innovation. “Oppo Hyderabad R&D centre takes relevant insights from the customer feedback and caters to bring innovations that are localised as per their needs,” he said.
“Further, we are bullish on manufacturing and hence are maintaining a healthy supply of products using state-of-the-art technology. With our high-tech manufacturing prowess, innovative automation and equipment, our greater Noida factory currently manufactures one smartphone every three seconds to ensure a seamless supply chain of smartphones to market,” he added.
