Hyderabad: The surgeons from Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in collaboration with faculty in Craniofacial Surgery from New York University, United States, conducted life-saving advanced facial reconstruction on a 7-year-old boy from Hyderabad between January 6 and 7.
Koushal, the 7-year-old was born with a birth defect of deformed head shape due to Craniosynostosis, a condition in which the skull is misshapen, limiting the growth of the brain. Koushal also underwent a neurosurgery when he was 6-months old.
His head continued to grow but in abnormal shape with the eyes protruding out of the orbits due to inadequate growth of the midface. His problems were further worsened by his inability to sleep straight in the nights with sudden falls in oxygen saturations, up to 50 percent sometimes less, doctors said.
The NIMS hospital surgeons decided to take-up corrective surgeries to increase the airway as well as to protect his eyes. The surgery was conducted in collaboration with Dr. David A Staffenberg, a visiting faculty to the Dept of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery from the US.
Koushal was able to sleep supine on the same day of surgery without any need for the CPAP machine.
