Hyderabad sees erratic, localized rainfall with thunderstorms likely amid high humidity
Hyderabad has experienced erratic, localized rainfall over the past week, with some areas receiving heavy showers while others remain dry. The IMD predicts light rain and thunderstorms with gusty winds as high humidity above 80 percent continues to trigger intense rainfall.
Hyderabad: In the last one week or so, the weather in Hyderabad has been erratic and unpredictable. Several parts of the city are witnessing scattered and extremely localized downpours, in which one area for instance old city on Tuesday receiving heavy downpours within a short-duration while other localities remaining completely dry.
While several core parts of Hyderabad experienced a short burst of light to moderate rainfall on Tuesday, which led to massive traffic jams, many areas in the east and western parts were totally dry.
As a result of the unpredictable and scattered nature, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD)-Hyderabad and independent weather forecasters have largely confined themselves to issuing broader city-wide weather forecasts, avoiding specific localised rainfall alerts.
In its Wednesday weather forecast, the IMD-Hyderabad said “Generally cloudy sky. Light rain or thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are very likely to occur”.
Independent weather trackers active on social media platforms, have indicated that parts of the city could witness scattered but intense thunderstorms from afternoon through the night.
Weather experts attribute the erratic behaviour to the prevalence of high humidity. For the past few days, Hyderabad and its surrounding areas have been recording high humidity, ranging from 80 percent to 85 percent.
The Wednesday forecast for Hyderabad also indicates that humidity will remain above 80 percent, which is a condition that can trigger heavier and more intense rain.
