Hyderabad: Traffic police officials who were checking vehicles to prevent frivolous and unauthorised use of sirens were in for a shock when they found a siren-blaring ambulance carrying a dog in a cage.
The West Zone traffic police took up a special drive on Tuesday to check unauthorised use of sirens near Banjara Hills when they noticed a siren-blaring ambulance rushing ahead. The officials stopped it just to check whether it was carrying a patient, but were dumbfounded to see a dog in a cage.
The ambulance driver Laxminarayana maintained that he was bringing the dog from Himayatnagar and that he was on his way to a veterinary hospital in Madinaguda to get the dog sterilised.
Police officials seized the ambulance and booked a case against the driver for frivolous use of siren.
Police officials said sirens were meant to be used only in life-threatening situations and while transporting seriously ill people. Of late, private vehicles were also found to be using sirens and in some instances, ambulance drivers use the siren just because their vehicle has one fitted.
