Hyderabad: A 36-year-old man from Sudan with a severely disabled left knee following an injury sustained three years ago regained the ability to stand and move after a complex knee reconstruction at Medicover Hospitals, Hitec City, Hyderabad.

The patient underwent several operations in his country, but the knee had fused into a fixed, bent position, stiff, painful, and unable to straighten, accompanied by heavy scarring and an old, badly broken kneecap.

Dr Koteshwara Prasad Veeragandham, senior Orthopaedic and Joint Replacement Surgeon, prepared a treatment plan and, as the tissue around the knee was extensively scarred, first carried out corrective work to prepare the area. Then a hinged total knee replacement, a specialised implant used when the knee’s own ligaments and bone can no longer provide stability, was performed.

Despite the scarring, the operation restored the knee’s alignment, stability, and range of movement, and the patient’s recovery was uncomplicated; he has since begun a structured rehabilitation programme, Dr Veeragandham said.
