Hyderabad: Surgeons at Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) Secunderabad utilized robotic neurosurgery techniques to detect the seizure centre in a 9-year-old boy’s brain.

Led by senior neurosurgeon Dr. Manas Panigrahi, the doctors employed robotic guidance technique to place four electrodes in the boy’s brain and record the electrical activity which enabled them in identifying the exact location from where the seizures were happening.

After identifying the location, whether that part can be removed or not will be decided by the team of surgeons in due course. The hospital epilepsy team has managed to localize from where the seizure is starting and they are planning for resection surgery in future. Post final surgery, the child could be allowed to attend the school and continue his day-to-day activities.

The youngster, who was admitted to KIMS hospital with uncontrolled seizures, underwent a series of diagnostic tests including MRI brain and even video ECG led by neurologist and epileptologist, Dr. Dr. Sita Jayalaxmi. However, doctors were unable to detect the source from where the seizures started and decided to employ robotic enabled procedure.

Robotic use of electrodes helps in accurate determination of the source of the seizure and such procedures are painless, more accurate than traditional manual intervention. The time taken for the robotic procedure is also very less while manual intervention takes at least seven hours.
