Hyderabad: Doctors at SLG Hospitals, Nizampet, have treated three patients, who had developed ‘Black Fungus’ or Mucormycosis, a serious and often fatal fungal infection, after recovering from Covid-19.
The patients were from different age groups 25 years, 42 years and 63 years. After recovering from Covid-19, they reported nasal obstruction and eye-sight related complaints. “They were earlier treated with steroids and were put on oxygen support too. Large traces of Mucormycosis were found in their nasal cavity, and this required surgical procedure to ensure their eye-sight could be saved and restored,” Dr. Bhargaw Ilapakurty, Head and Neck Surgeon, SLG Hospitals said.
To ensure the infection did not spread further, the doctors performed endoscopic sinus surgery along with orbital decompression, a procedure that involves removing or thinning of various safe orbital walls, thereby expanding the eye socket and allowing the eyeball to settle back, doctors in a press release said.
Covid patients with comorbid conditions like uncontrolled diabetes, prolonged ICU stay, those on powerful steroids, or with history of organ transplant or tumours, are vulnerable to black fungus.
