Hyderabad’s Mehdipatnam skywalk nears completion, operational by March 2026
Hyderabad’s Mehdipatnam skywalk, over 90% complete, is set to open by March 2026. The 390-metre steel and glass pedestrian bridge will ease traffic, feature 13 elevators, LED lights, coffee shops, and accommodate 30,000 daily pedestrians.
Hyderabad: After years of anticipation and delays, Hyderabad’s second skywalk at Mehdipatnam is entering its final stretch. The project is over 90 per cent complete, with finishing works currently underway to make it operational by this March, Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) officials confirmed.
A brainchild of former BRS MA&UD Minister, K T Rama Rao, the Mehdipatnam skywalk initiative was taken to ease heavy traffic congestion, on the lines of city’s first skywalk at Uppal.
The BRS government launched major efforts to procure the necessary defence land, which included multiple visits by K T Rama Rao to New Delhi to meet Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The approval and transfer of nearly 3,380 square yards of defence land finally concluded last year, clearing the way for the project’s completion.
The steel pedestrian skywalk between Humayun Nagar Police Station and Rythu Bazar, and from Gudi Malkapur Traffic Junction to the Mehdipatnam bus bay, has been completed. Work on a foot-over-bridge connecting Mehdipatnam Rythu Bazar and the bus bay, near the Defence area (towards Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital), is expected to commence soon.
“HMDA has approached the city’s Traffic Wing to coordinate the completion of the pending works. We require a specific earmarked area to deploy jumbo hydraulic machines. The agency concerned will carry out this work at night to avoid inconvenience to commuters,” executive engineer HMDA, Hari Krishna, told Telangana Today.
The 390-metre-long elevated skywalk features five entry and exit points at Rythu Bazar, Defence compound wall (Military Garrison), bus bay area (Mehdipatnam), near Humayun Nagar Police Station, and at Gudimalkapur Junction at Mehdipatnam. Once operational, the facility will allow pedestrians to bypass the chaotic road traffic entirely.
The Rs 38 crore project was originally slated for completion by May 2025, but was delayed due to land clearance process. Beyond transit, the skywalk will offer coffee shops, gateway corners, and lounge snacks. The skywalk is expected to have 13 elevators and two intermediate tunnel walks, and is expected to witness a heavy footfall of 30,000 a day.
The skywalk is being constructed from glass and steel and will feature six access points at a height of 6.15 metres above the ground. An exclusive elevator chair is proposed for the physically challenged, and LED strip lights along the arch, cables, and walkway tunnels are planned to elevate the skywalk area’s beauty, the HMDA official said.
