Is your phone making you miserable? Here is a science-backed case for a 42-day digital detox

Hyderabad: Does completely cutting yourself off from all social media accounts for a few weeks improve mental health? Could six weeks away from your smartphone change your perspective on life?

A landmark study, published in the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, part of the prestigious American Economic Association, by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) suggests that for millions of users, the answer is a definitive yes.

The researchers tracked thousands of participants who deactivated their Facebook and Instagram accounts and detected a measurable ‘happiness dividend’.

The study revealed that deactivating social media platforms led to significant improvements in emotional well-being, specifically reducing self-reported levels of anxiety and depression.

The positive impact was most profound among women under 25 on Instagram. This group saw nearly triple the emotional boost compared to the average user, likely due to a reduction in harmful social comparison. For Facebook, the mental health benefits were most significant for users over the age of 35, who reported feeling less overwhelmed by political polarization and misinformation.

Interestingly, quitting didn’t necessarily lower total screen time. Many users simply swapped Instagram for TikTok or YouTube. However, their mood still improved, suggesting that Meta’s specific algorithms and social structures may be uniquely taxing on the psyche.

While participants reported feeling less informed about current events, they also felt less ‘outraged’.

As digital fatigue grows, the study provides hard evidence that a temporary ‘digital reset’ isn’t just a trend, it’s a scientifically backed method for rejuvenating mental health.
