Hyderabad: The Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Hyderabad (JNTU-H) has decided to introduce BTech (Hons) and BTech Minor degree programmes in emerging/multidisciplinary areas from this academic year.

As part of the scheme, students of the same or another department can take the minimum additional credits in the range of 18-20 and get a degree with honours or minor from the same or another department, the JNTU-H said on Friday.

For example, if a mechanical engineering student selects and pursues prescribed courses from an emerging area like Data Science under the scheme, the student will be awarded B.Tech degree of Mechanical Engineering (Major) with Minor in Data Science.

According to the university, introduction of honours/minor specialisation in emerging/multidisciplinary areas in the undergraduate degree courses is to improve domain knowledge and employability in conventional branches. The duration of all programmes is four years.

Students can register for the honours/ minor programmes in existing B.Tech second year first semester in parallel with the regular curriculum from this academic year.

“Students will be given a choice of withdrawing all the courses registered and/or credits earned for honours/minor course/degree, and in that case the students will be awarded only BTech degree in the concerned specialisation on earning the required credits of 160 in specified duration,” the JNTU-H said.

For registering into a minor/ honours programme, students should not have any backlogs by the end of second year. Also, for offering these programmes, the departments concerned should have NBA accreditation and MTech programmes in the subject.

The B.Tech students in regular stream can opt for B.Tech(Hons), provided they have a CGPA of 8.0 up to the end of fourth semester without any history of arrears, the JNTU-H said.

This apart, the university is re-introducing MSc teaching and research programmes in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, M.Pharmacy Pharmaceutical Chemistry, M.Sc. Environmental Science and Technology from this academic year. The varsity is also planning to establish centres of excellence, centre for sophisticated instrument facility and centre for professional advancement and continuing education.

Meanwhile, the JNTU-H is organizing its Golden Jubilee celebrations on Sunday.
