Kamareddy: After successfully setting up a rooftop solar plant on the Chief of Planning office (CPO) situated at the Integrated District Offices Complex (IDOC), the district administration is now contemplating to run the entire Integrated District Offices Complex on solar energy.

The district administration has reportedly contacted the Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TGREDCO), which has set up a pilot solar plant at the CPO in the district, for installing solar panels on the IDOC. Sources say the estimated cost of the project would be around Rs. 95 lakh for a 10 KW solar power plant.

District officials claimed that since the State government has taken a decision to install rooftop solar plants on all the government buildings, the funds would not be an issue. The 1 megawatt CPO solar plant is reportedly generating about 35 units of power per day, whereas its per day consumption is around 20 units. The balance units are being rerouted to the grid and used as per the need. The TGGENCO is purchasing power at the rate of Rs. 3 per unit from the CPO solar plant.

Recently, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has asked officials of the REDCO to set up solar energy panels on all government offices in the State on a war footing. Already the State government has started installing solar panels on 1,521 schools buildings under the Mana Ooru – Mana Badi programme. The solar panels have been installed on over 600 government schools and the rest is expected to be completed in the next few months, sources say.

According to power officials, the State government was keen to promote solar rooftop systems in the domestic sector and government institutions under the PM Surya Ghar scheme launched by the Union government. Under this scheme, it is proposed to solarise the government buildings in the State to meet the power requirement through solar energy in an environmentally sustainable manner.

The neighbouring Andhra Pradesh government has announced the installation of solar rooftop systems on all government buildings by the end of 2025. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd (NVVN) and the New & Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Ltd (NREDCAP) to install solar panels on government buildings. The AP government has proposed to implement 300 MW of solar rooftop systems across various government buildings in the first phase of the project.
