Khammam: Chilli farmers in the district demanded that the government pay compensation to the farmers whose crop was damaged by pest infestation. Seeking to consider the damage to the crop as a natural calamity and Rs 1 lakh per acre compensation, a large number of farmers laid siege to the district horticulture office here on Friday

The protest was staged under the aegis of CPI, CPM and CPI ML New Democracy affiliated farmers’ unions. The union leaders A Rama Kotaiah, D Ramesh, D Rambabu, M Ramesh, A Venkateshwarlu and M Nageswar Rao took part in the protest. Addressing the gathering they said chilli was grown in an area of 1.30 lakh acres and the crop suffered unprecedented damage this year. The farmers were unable to gain even a quintal yield per acre and not able to replace the crop with another one.

Nearly 60 percent of the chilli farmers were tenant farmers and they paid the tenancy fee of Rs 30, 000 per acre, the leaders informed. They wanted the government to give orders to banks to stop recovery of crop loans from chilli farmers.
