Khammam: Alarmed at the increase in the number of Covid-19 cases, voluntary lockdown was being imposed in many villages and the traders have reduced business hours in erstwhile Khammam district.
In a statement here, Khammam Merchants Association president V Venkateshwar Rao informed the association had decided to impose a partial lockdown by reducing business hours in the city from Saturday onwards.
The decision was taken in the wake of a spike in Covid-19 positive cases, he said adding that the shops would be open from 8 am to 2.30 pm. The restrictions imposed on business hours would be in force until the situation improves, he noted.
Similarly, the traders at Sujatha Nagar mandal headquarters in Kothagudem district have imposed a partial lockdown voluntarily from Friday onwards reducing business hours from 6 am to 1 pm to control spread of Covid-19.
A total lockdown was imposed at Cherla mandal headquarters in Kothagudem district while the weekly markets that were functioning in Bhadrachalam and Dummugudem mandals were cancelled indefinitely in the wake of Covid situation.
Small Hotels Association of Bhadrachalam has decided to stop running the roadside eateries and small hotels from Sunday as the Covid cases were increasing in the temple town. Meanwhile, with the AP government imposing partial lockdown in that State, the prices of tender coconut have gone up in erstwhile Khammam. AP was the main supplier of tender coconuts.
As the lockdown in Andhra Pradesh affected the transportation of tender coconuts, they were now being sold at Rs 25 to Rs 35 per piece much to the worry of the buyers. Normally, the tender coconuts are sold at Rs 15 to Rs 20 per coconut.
