Warangal: Every student has specific abilities, interests, and career goals and wishes to enhance his/her academic learning experiences. Similarly, employers also look for graduates with different combinations of competencies with T-shaped skills. Hence, opportunities for additional learning are the major requirement for students to bridge the industry-academia gap.

Keeping this in view, Kakatiya Institute of Technology and Science (KITS) is offering the undergraduate (UG) programme (B Tech) with Honours/Minors. “We revised the curriculum which can be applied for the batches admitted from the academic year 2018-19,” KITS Principal Prof K Ashoka Reddy said.

“According to the provisions laid down in AICTE model curriculum for the undergraduate course in Engineering and Technology, January 2018, a student will be eligible to get UG Degree with Honours in one’s own discipline and/or additional Minor in Engineering in a discipline other than one’s own, if he/she completes an additional 20 credits, in addition to basic degree 160 credit requirement. These additional 20 credits could be acquired through MOOCs (Massive Online Open Courses),” Prof Reddy explained.

When asked the need for the importance of this additional set of ‘skills/knowledge’, Prof Reddy said that one of the many ways to stand out when applying for jobs, graduate school or professional school was having a Minor/Honour additional degree.

“With this facility, a non – Computer Science Engineering (CSE) branch student can do a Minor in CSE. For example, a Civil/ Mechanical/ EEE/ ECE/ ECI engineering student can do a minor programme in the CSE. That student of Civil Engineering (CE) will be conferred with an undergraduate degree as ” Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering, with Minor in Computer Science and Engineering” and Similarly, a CSE student who did Honours in CSE will be conferred with an undergraduate degree as ” Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science and Engineering, with Honours,” Prof Reddy said, adding that students who could not get into the branch of their choice or interest at the time of admissions can happily use this good opportunity at KITSW for doing Minor in their interested areas of engineering.

“Minoring in something means you’re going above and beyond the bare minimum. This effort can impress potential employers. It’s an extra bonus if the minor is in an area applicable to them. Honours additional degree, according to Prof Reddy, is the next step if the student seeking a competitive edge in his/her career and want to become an expert in his/her field or kick start the pathway to a PhD,” Prof Ashoka Reddy said and added that it would show that the student can handle the additional workload.

“However, the students must not let their Minor/Honours just sit on their resume,” he advised the students asking them to make their potential displayed at the different or how it has broadened their skill set to their employers.
“Being awarded honours will fine-tune your research, critical thinking and communication abilities and demonstrate to employers that you can challenge yourself and go the extra mile,” he told the students. Meanwhile, Prof M Sreelatha said that around 120 students had already registered for Minor in CSE and 75 students for Honours in various disciplines of Engineering in their institute.
