It only seems a month ago when I was compiling the list for the best games of 2020 but, here we are as another year has zoomed past us. With limited mobility, unending apprehension, and a new variant brimming up anxiety, time and space have lost all meaning as we find ways to break the humdrum, mundane routines of our limited lives. This week as we begin to bid farewell to 2021, we take a look at the best free-to-play games for smartphones and tablets.
The top five picks this year, offer a bit of everything irrespective of the player you are. We have something for players looking for a few minutes of leisure, and something for those willing to put in the grind to becoming the best. Something for those seeking stories and a world to immerse themselves into and also something for those looking to experience a new way of playing cards. So, without much ado here they are:
Best for the casuals: Skip-Bo, free to play on Android and iOS
A card game based on the classic deck of Uno; Skip-Bo is one of the best card games released this year. A game that provides a wonderful twist on Solitaire and has two unique game modes, Skip-Bo provides some much-needed short bursts of fun on long days that seem unending. A game that can be played either simply or with high levels of strategizing, Skip-Bo has a wonderful multiplayer mode and a puzzle mode that only gets more difficult with every level. If you are still on the edge about giving the game a try, there is also a friend-mode in the works and once that is out, Skip-Bo can be the perfect break-away.
The Among-Us alternative: Suspects, free to play on Android and iOS also includes a season-pass
One of the best new takes on the murder/mafia game-mode, Suspects is everything Among-Us should have been. With a baked in voice chat system that works during a game, unending game modes, the perfect lobby conversation system, unending customization, and a variety of maps this game is simply perfect. When reviewed earlier in May this year the game needed to work out quite a few kinks but since then it has only gotten better and bigger. With three new game modes and unending replay value this is the best way to spend your evenings indoors. Make sure to play with the right group, I am part of one of the best and I have witnessed hours simply fly by.
Best for the competitors: Pokémon Unite, free to play on Android, iOS, and Switch
Pokémon Unite is a multiplayer online battlefield arena (MOBA) like League of legends and DoTA, the difference being that here you play with Pokémon. An amazingly well-made game, this is one where classic MOBA mechanics meet unique Pokémon attacks and lead to immense amounts of fun. With small game cycles, an immense scope for strategy, and butter-smooth matchmaking, Unite is every Pokémon fan’s dream come true. The winner of the best game title in Google Play awards of 2021, this is a must try if you like the world of Pokémon. There is just something about unleashing your favorite creature’s signature move on an unsuspecting opponent just when he/she is about to score a goal that words can’t do justice to.
Best narrative experience: Nier Re-incarnation, free to play on Android and iOS
Re-incarnation is simply spell-binding and its story top-notch. The music and the visuals can make you wonder how a game as beautiful as this was made available for free on a mobile phone. It tells the story of an automaton with a finesse and polish that I have never experienced with a free to play game before. The combat is a bit too simplistic but the story does more than enough to keep you hooked. Give it a try if you look for amazing narratives in your games.
Best open-world experience: Fer.al, free to play on Android, iOS and PC
The last game to be featured on this list is all about scale and open-worlds. Fer.al is on mobile what World of Warcraft is to players on PC, a live open-world with lots of players and lots of room for exploration. The game’s experience was a bit incomplete and unfinished when first reviewed in March 2021, but since then it has gotten better by leaps and bounds. Give it a try if you like to explore open-worlds, not playing a humanoid character is great change of perspective.
