Hyderabad: Mo.co, Supercell’s latest F2P entry after last year’s Squad Busters, is not only a very different experience but also has nothing to do with the characters from the ‘Clashuniverse’. Designed as an online co-op experience with multiplayer elements the game has a mix of open maps in bright colours and some easy combat sequences from the very star. With a very gentle starting curve and some intuitive controls, there is a lot here to like for first time players and for those who haven’t dabbled in the genre.
The game starts in your apartment where you are contacted by people from a mysterious organization called “Mo.co”, who need your help to combat monsters across a variety of levels and terrains. You begin your journey using a club to clobber monsters but soon upgrade with a variety of gear to face bigger challenges. The game offers a nice mix of weapons, outfits, and equipment to spice things up. The strength of this game lies in its easy combat and the simplicity in which you can pick up the game at any given point during the day and start playing.
In terms of gameplay, you play to accomplish certain objectives and the moment these are achieved the game requires you to go back home to upgrade your gear, equipment, and level up your character. There are a wide variety of monsters to fight and some of the bigger ones drop “chaos cores” which can be used to upgrade equipment. As you level up, you acquire more cores at the end of missions and the game decides which of your gear gets upgraded at random. The randomness of the game means that you are constantly switching your gear and as a result your playstyles and strategies. This is a game where you can switch between being a healer, a tank, or someone who deals heavy damage quite quickly depending on the nature of the challenge.
Alongside missions where you are expected to fulfill objectives, there are also special levels where you face boss monsters in teams of 4 called “rift challenges,” Which can be unlocked at a certain level for special rewards. I found these quite challenging and thoroughly enjoyed working with other players. The rifts also have a time element, and you get added rewards for finishing quicker or for dealing higher damage. The game has all the right ways of incentivising players for repeated engagement like the season pass, time-based login bonuses, and a series of special objectives that can only be fulfilled under unique circumstances. Levelling up is quick and acquiring special gear is not too difficult.
Despite its many strengths there are a few minor issues with mo.co, firstly, the simplistic combat never gets too complex and success in missions is sometimes less about skill and about how many players are available on the server. Secondly, the server and connection sometimes can freeze up and quitting the game and coming back into it is at such times the only solution. It is important to mention how wonderfully this game is optimised in terms of battery consumption – this is one game where you needn’t be worried about having to charge your phone too quickly.
A great game to kickstart this year’s monsoon season, Mo.co has all the ingredients to be a strong contender for the best free to play game this year.
