Hyderabad: BRS candidate for Jubilee Hills bypoll Maganti Sunitha hit back at Congress leaders for accusing the party of raking up sympathy in the by-election campaign, asking whether people would not cry when a loved one from the family passes away.
Speaking at a road show in Borabanda, Sunitha said people from across the State were reaching out to express solidarity and offer support to her family in their time of loss. “I am humbled by their support and at times cannot control my emotions, but even that is being politicised,” she said.
She described the past few months as extremely challenging for her family. “My two daughters are approaching every doorstep seeking votes for their father and want to continue his legacy. But cases are being booked against us,” she said, assuring that she would work for the overall development of the constituency if elected.
Earlier, Sameena Yasmeen, widow of BRS leader Mohammed Sardar who ended his life in Borabanda earlier this year, recalled her husband’s ordeal. She alleged that the Congress government’s harassment had driven him to suicide.
In May, Sardar jumped from the terrace of his house and died on the spot. “My husband was constantly pressured to join the Congress, but he refused. Raids were conducted at his shop, and warnings were issued that our house would be demolished,” Yasmeen told the gathering.
“Cases have been booked against those responsible, but there has been little action. All I want is justice,” she said.
