Hyderabad: At least 30 temporary huts were damaged when a major fire broke in one of them on the pavement near Victory playground at Chaderghat on Friday. No casualties were reported in the fire.
According to the police, the incident occurred after one of the huts caught fire when a woman was cooking in the evening. Alerted by this, residents in the hut and those adjacent to it rushed out to safety.
Within minutes, the fire spread to other huts in the neighbourhood and the stalls selling straw baskets and other decorative items. Locals in the nearby residential area and motorists passing by the road, noticed the fire and alerted the fire department and the police.
The fire personnel and police rushed to the spot and immediately vacated the residents and doused the fire within one hour.
Officials said straw and plastic material in the huts could have led to the thick smoke apart from the unpleasant odour emanating from the burning of plastic, fiber and straw material in the surroundings.
The total worth of the damaged property is yet to be estimated. A complaint was yet to be lodged.
The Afzalgunj police are investigating.
