Hyderabad: The desperate efforts of the Maoists to revive the movement in Telangana State were effectively foiled by the police during the joint operations carried out with the State and Central forces, Director-General of Police M Mahendar Reddy said on Friday. The Maoist activities were confined to the border areas between Telangana and neighbouring Chhattisgarh. In all, 98 extremists were arrested while 133 of them surrendered, he said.
Two district committee members, four area committee members’, eight dalam members were among those who were surrendered before the police. The police seized eight firearms apart from ammunition and explosives and Rs 1.26 lakh in cash. Reddy said the Police Department would file a charge sheet against the arrested over-ground activists of CPI (Maoist) and strive for obtaining their conviction.
Reddy said armed outposts were also posted at Telangana and Chhattisgarh borders with the assistance of the Central government to restrict the entry of Maoists into the State. “No activities of underground armed formation of CPI (Maoist) are noticed in the State. Timely dissemination of information led to the occurrence of three exchanges of fire. This resulted in the killing of half a dozen naxals at Pesalapadu forest bordering Telangana’s Bhadradri-Kothagudem district,” he said.
