Medak: Despite prior warnings from the India Meteorological Department and other weather agencies that Medak district would receive heavy rains for three days from August 26, officials apparently failed to remain prepared to tackle the situation.
As residents woke up on Wednesday hoping to celebrate Vinayaka Chavithi, relentless rains and floods dampened the festive spirit. Several villagers in Havelighanpur mandal had erected Ganesh pandals, but were forced indoors by the downpour. With an official holiday in place for government departments, the administration was caught unprepared to deal with the emergency.
Collector Rahul Raj released a video message only on Thursday evening, after rains had already caused widespread damage. Shockingly, there was no trace of MLA Mynampally Rohit in his constituency as floods wreaked havoc.
Several roads and lakes across the district suffered breaches, while major projects such as the Pocharam reservoir received unprecedented inflows. Officials also failed to alert citizens in advance. Medak witnessed one of the heaviest spells of rainfall in its history on Wednesday night and throughout Thursday.
Streams swelled and overflowed into agricultural fields, submerging low-lying areas. Dhup Singh Thanda and Timmaipally villages in Havelighanpur mandal were among the worst-hit. Timmaipally was inundated following a breach in a lake, while Dhup Singh Thanda was flooded as an adjoining stream spilled into the village.
