Hyderabad: Several localities located on either side of Musi River bore the brunt of heavy inflows into the river after water from the two reservoirs of Himayatsagar and Osmansagar was released.
Heavy inflows into the reservoirs, said to be unprecedented in the last several decades, left several houses submerged at Shankernagar and Moosanagar located at Chaderghat, from Friday night onwards.
The Musi roared through the colonies adjoining the shores and left several of them submerged even as the residents scrambled to safety.
Several residents alleged the officials failed to warn them about the opening of all Osmansagar gates.
“We were not informed at all by the administration. After noticing the water levels rising sharply, we rushed out to safety,” complained Minhaj, a resident of Moosanagar.
Two bridges, Moosarambagh causeway and Chaderghat Bridge, were closed for the public after water started flowing and submerging them. In Bahadurpura and Kishanbagh, water entered into several houses at Asadbabanagar, Mahmoodnagar and MO colony.
“The authorities hurriedly came and asked us to shift out. By the time we could shift the belongings, the water level rose rapidly and entered our houses. We ran out and saved our lives, many belongings were swept away,” said Raheemullah, a mason who stays at Asadbabanagar.
The Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) was inundated after the retaining wall collapsed and water from Musi flowed into the bus station. Caught in the waterlogged premises, the passengers spent harrowing time before they could step out using ropes and assistance. The bus services from the station were temporarily halted and alternate arrangements made.
The 100 feet road at Jiyaguda was closed for the public as it was inundated. The surrounding areas were under a sheet of water even as the locals struggled to wade through the water. At Narsingi, the water released from the reservoir gushed out on the Outer Ring Road segments disrupting the traffic.
Meanwhile, the family of a priest was stranded in a temple at Puranapul and spent the Friday night on the gopuram before help could reach them.
