Warships and high-level delegations representing navies from 40 countries are taking part in Milan-2022, the Indian Navy’s nine-day multilateral exercises, which got underway on February 25 in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
Two-phase multilateral exercise
The naval jamboree is being held in two phases, with the harbour phase scheduled from February 25 to 28 and the sea phase from March 1 to 4. The theme of Milan-2022 is ‘Camaraderie – Cohesion – Collaboration’ which aims to project India as a responsible maritime power to the world at large.
In this edition of the biennial naval exercises, the focus is on exercises at sea, including exercises in surface, sub-surface and air domains and weapon firings. Operational conferences and seminars are also being conducted, providing participating navies and their delegations an opportunity to express their views on maritime security.
MILAN 2022
MILAN 22 will witness its largest-ever participation, with more than 40 countries sending their warships/ high level delegations.
This edition of MILAN will be larger in ‘scope and complexity with focus on exercises at sea including exercises in surface, sub-surface and air domains and weapon firings. Theme 2022: ‘Camaraderie – Cohesion – Collaboration’.
MILAN, a biennial naval exercise
1) MILAN is a biennial multilateral naval exercise incepted by Indian Navy in 1995 at Andaman and Nicobar Command.
2) Starting with the participation of only four countries, viz Indonesia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand, in the 1995 edition, the exercise has since transitioned leaps and bounds in terms of number of participants and complexity of exercises.
3) Originally conceived in consonance with India’s ‘Look East Policy’, MILAN expanded in ensuing years with India’s ‘Act East policy and Security And Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) initiative, to include participation from island nations in the Western Indian Ocean Region.
