Hyderabad: Conventional degree courses appear to have returned to gain popularity among students. This is an indication from the increasing number of students enrolling into these courses through the Degree Online Services, Telangana (DOST).
According to the details available with Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE), as many as 2,29,154 students enrolled in BA, BCom and BSc courses during the academic year 2021-22 as against 2,22,715 in 2020-21 and 1,87,833 in 2019-20.
Of the total admissions during this academic year, 54,758 students got admitted in 138 government and 1,74,396 candidates enrolled in 824 private aided and unaided degree colleges. This year, a total of 4,17,740 seats were up for grabs in 962 degree colleges in the State.
The government degree colleges have been increasing their admission capacity over the past few years. While the number of seats up of grabs was 45,469 in 2018-19, it was increased to 46,495 in 2019-20, 49,165 in 2020-21 and 54,758 this year.
The seats in university constituent and government degree colleges including Osmania University College for Women, Nizam College, City College and Government Degree College for Women, Begumpet, have seen a huge demand among students. In fact, the majority of top scorers in the intermediate public examinations have chosen to join courses in these colleges.
One of the main reasons for increase in enrollments in government degree colleges could be attributed to the introduction of new courses and combinations besides improving quality of education and infrastructure as well.
“During the academic year 2014-15, 15 government degree colleges had National Assessment and Accreditation (NAAC) grades. But now the government degree colleges having such grades are at 80. This shows there is an improvement in the quality of education besides infrastructure.
Moreover, new courses and combinations have been introduced in government degree colleges which are attracting more students,” TSCHE Chairman Prof R Limbadri said.
Among six conventional universities in the State, Osmania University (OU) was top pick for students. While there were 1,54,460 seats available in 350 colleges under the OU, 90,657 candidates took admissions.
46 private colleges record zero admissions
For several managements, attracting students to their respective degree colleges has become a herculean task.
This year, as many as 46 private degree colleges have recorded zero admissions. This meant none of the students choose to join these colleges during the Degree Online Services, Telangana (DOST) counselling.
Of the total colleges, 19 colleges with zero admissions were under the Mahatma Gandhi University, Nalgonda, 10 colleges were under the Osmania University and nine were under Kakatiya University, Warangal.
Similarly, several colleges have made a meager number of admissions which were not viable for the managements particularly for the private to run the show. For a case in point, 184 colleges including four government and 180 private colleges have admissions which is less than 30 per cent of the total intake. Likewise, 216 private and 31 government colleges could make admissions between 30 per cent and 49 per cent of the total available seats.
