Movie Review: Havoc emerges as an entertaining action flick where survival is key

In an age when action thrillers often favour gloss over grit, ‘Havoc’ emerges as a welcome throwback to something rawer and more physical. Directed by Gareth Evans (The Raid series) and starring Tom Hardy, Netflix’s latest release plunges viewers into a world where violence isn’t flashy. It is survival.

Hardy plays Walker, a worn-down detective thrust into the city’s criminal underworld after a drug deal goes wrong. His task is to rescue a kidnapped politician’s son. It quickly spirals into a descent through layers of corruption and brutality. As Walker, Hardy delivers another towering performance, fusing toughness with weary vulnerability. His physical commitment is extraordinary; every grimace and staggered breath makes Walker’s battered journey feel painfully authentic.


Gareth Evans brings his trademark kinetic style to the film’s brutal action sequences. Long, exhausting brawls unfold in grimy hallways and rain-slicked alleyways, shot with bone-crunching realism. The violence here isn’t choreographed to look stylish. It is messy, desperate, and draining, matching the film’s bleak tone.

The supporting cast is strong across the board. Forest Whitaker brings a quiet dignity as a veteran officer navigating a system too broken to fix. Jessie Mei Li shines as a street-smart informant whose loyalty is never guaranteed. Timothy Olyphant, in a short but memorable role, plays a calculating detective with icy charm. Though Olyphant’s screen time is limited, he seizes every second, injecting a sly, simmering menace that briefly shifts the film’s energy whenever he appears.

Visually, Havoc is drenched in atmosphere. Cinematographer Matt Flannery captures the city in muted greys and sickly blues, evoking a sense of decay that mirrors the moral rot eating away at every level of society. The sound design deepens the immersion, with distant sirens, dripping rain, and crunching footsteps enhancing the oppressive mood. The spare, tension-filled score by Aria Prayogi and Fajar Yuskemal complements the film’s relentless drive without ever overpowering it.

What distinguishes ‘Havoc’ from most action films is its emotional undercurrent. This is not a story of clean victories but of punishing survival. Evans is less interested in showcasing heroism than he is in portraying what it costs to simply endure.

Still, the film’s unrelenting grimness and laser focus on its protagonist can leave little breathing room for its secondary players. Some may find its single-mindedness exhausting. Yet for those willing to plunge into its dark alleys, ‘Havoc’ offers a harrowing, grounded experience.

Anchored by Tom Hardy’s magnetic performance and bolstered by Gareth Evans’ unflinching direction, this 2 hour plus ‘Havoc’ stands as a bruising testament to survival in a world that has already given up.
