As many as 227 people from 90 families living along the Munneru riverbanks in Khammam were shifted to relief centres due to rising water levels following heavy rains from Cyclone Montha. Officials are ensuring safety, food, and medical services at camps.
Residential colonies on the banks of river Munneru flooded with rise in water level.
Khammam: As many as 227 members of 90 families living in colonies along the banks of the Munneru river were shifted to relief centres where they were provided food and medical services, said District Collector Anudeep Durisetty.
Due to heavy rains caused by Cyclone Montha in the upper catchment of Munneru, the water level in the river reached 25 feet at the Khammam Kalvoddu area, with the third danger warning in force. The river received huge inflows from the Aakeru and Pagideru streams.
The Collector, along with Mayor P Neeraja, Additional Collector P Sreeja, and Municipal Commissioner Abhishek Agastya, inspected the Kalvoddu area and relief centres on Thursday. People from low-lying areas were also shifted to relief centres set up at Dhamsalapuram School, Government Degree College, and Nayabazar College, he said.
Officials were instructed to monitor the rising water levels of Munneru and ensure better facilities for children, the elderly, and women at the relief centres. Steps have been taken to ensure minimal property damage and prevent loss of life. Traffic movement was stopped on 24 roads that were inundated, the Collector added.
