Nalgonda: Superintendent of Police A V Ranganath on Thursday flayed YSRCP MP Vijayasai Reddy for leveling allegation against him that he had close relations with TDP president Nara Chandrababu Naidu.
In a press release here, he said Vijayasai Reddy indirectly referred to his name when he mentioned about an SP of a bordering district of Andhra Pradesh in his comments on ganja issue. The ganja menace in Andhra-Odisha Order (AOB) was not new and all police officials knew very well that it has been around for the last 15 years, Ranganath said, taking objection to several allegations made by the YSRCP MP against him. It was ridiculous that the YSRCP MP also made baseless allegation that the police of Karnataka, Telangana, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh conducted raids in AOB to nab ganja smugglers on his word, he said.
Stating that it was not right on the part of Vijayasai Reddy to attribute motives to policemen from different states who have been working for the protection of law and order at the risk of their own lives, the SP said Vijayasai Reddy may have resorted to these allegations against him due to ignorance or on the basis of false information on the ganja menace. “It is a well known fact that ganja was being cultivated in thousands of acres in AOB spread across Visakhapatnam rural, East Godavari and Malkangiri district by the tribals. After Covid pandemic, ganja business spread to rural areas also since the youth, who were addicted to the substance, shifted to their native places from towns and also got some local youth get addicted to ganja, he said, adding that some youth took advantage of the situation and turned into ganja peddlers to make some easy money.
Stating that interrogation of ganja peddlers who were arrested in the district by the the local police confessed to links with cultivators in AOB, he said this prompted Nalgonda police to conduct raids in AOB area.
Moreover, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had issued instructions to the police to be tought with peddlers to turn Telangana into a ganja free state and to focus on ganja smuggling and its network. Following the instructions, Nalgonda district police conducted raids and vehicle checks and seized thousands of kgs of ganja that were being illegally smuggled into different places through National Highway No. 65 from AOB area. In all, 35 cases were filed against ganja smugglers in the district since September, Ranganath pointed out.
Giving details about the ganja operation of Nalgonda police in AOB, Ranganath said 17 police teams launched Operation Ganja in AOB on October 15 and this was conveyed to SPs of Visakhapatnam (rural) and East Godavari districts. SP (Police Training Centre) Sathish Chodagiri coordinated the police teams which took part in the operation in AOB. AP police also extended help to the police teams of Nalgonda in carrying out the raids against ganja operation. The special police teams conducted raids in AOB, a naxal affected area, placing their lives at risk and arrested several ganja smugglers. A police team opened fire in self defense when ganja smugglers attacked them at Lambasingi on October 17, the SP said, adding that he will share all the information regarding ganja network in AOB with the AP police throug proper channel.
He also appealed to the political parties in AP not to drag the police particularly him into politics on the ganja issue. “The leaders of political parties have been misinterpreting his statement on ganja operation as per their whims and fancies to gain political mileage,” he said and urged these to work towards rooting out ganja menace irrespective of political affiliations.
Stating that he was impartially working as SP of Nalgonda for the last four years, Ranganath categorically stated that he was striving hard to turn Nalgonda into a ganja-free district and would arrest the ganja smugglers wherever they operate even they are in AOB or Kashmir besides ensuring that the accused get punishment from the courts.
