Hyderabad: Haryana Steelers’ star raider Naveen Kumar said he was very happy and excited to be part of a champion team like Haryana Steelers.
“They have shown faith in me, and that makes me feel positive. It’s a champion side where everybody is performing well, and I believe they feel I can contribute even more. That’s probably why they brought me in. My only aim is to give my best and help Haryana Steelers become champions once again,’ Naveen said during a chat ‘Kings of Kabaddi’ on JioHotStar.
On becoming champions with Dabang Delhi in Season 8, Naveen said any team that would win a championship earns a special identity, and it’s a completely different feeling.
“There’s immense happiness knowing that all the hard work has paid off. Just like we were champions in Season 8, but then missed out last season, it gives you the confidence that winning is possible again. I strongly feel that if we practice harder, we (Haryana Steelers) can definitely win again. The ultimate goal is simple—we have to win,” he said.
On working with coach Manpreet Singh, Naveen said for him the coach would be like a true mentor. “We learn so much from him. He pays attention to every detail and explains even the smallest aspects of the game. He always says that if you play well, you’ll get more points, and if you grab a bonus, you’ll improve further,” he said.
“The coach constantly motivates me to become a champion again. The trust he and the team have shown in me makes me feel valued, and I’m very happy about that,” the star raider said.
On his legacy in PKL, Naveen said he had been named Most Valuable Player twice and winning it had been not only very special for him but also made him realize that he needed to push himself even harder to achieve more in his career.
On his preparations and tackling injuries, Naveen said they were part of the game but it was important to remain athletic and believe in oneself.
“My focus is always on performing well. I’ve been training differently this time—our mornings begin with sessions on speed, endurance, and reaction time, followed by gym work. We target any weaknesses in the body while building strength, stamina, and explosiveness to handle longer matches. I have to be strong, work on my muscles, and stay fit throughout the season,” he explained.
On his biggest rival this season, Naveen picked up Mohammadreza Shadloui. “His ankle holds and dives are very effective,
and playing against him is always a challenge but also enjoyable. Sometimes I win, sometimes he does—it’s exciting to compete against such a quality player. He has proven himself over the years and has consistently commanded in the auctions for the past three seasons,” Naveen concluded.
