Hyderabad: Mines Safety Deputy Director (retired) V Lakshmi Narayana said the sacrifices of miners who work in adverse conditions to extract minerals and resources were invaluable.
Addressing a webinar organised by MEAI Hyderabad Chapter on Monday, he stressed on the need to cut down mishaps in the mining sector and wanted the mining engineers and employees to work together to ensure zero incidents.
December 6 is observed as National Miners Day in the US following the tragic incident in which 362 miners lost their lives in West Virginia in 1907. In India, May 4 is observed as National Coal Mine Workers’ Day, he said.
Singareni Director (Operations) S Chandrashekhar said by adhering to the prescribed safety measures in mining sites, precious lives were being saved. There was a need to create awareness among miners and all those working in the sector on safety precautions to be followed at the work sites, he stressed. By using technology extensively in Singareni, mishaps were reduced considerably and aim was to record zero mishaps, he said.
MEAI Hyderabad chairperson and Malla Reddy College of Engineering’s Department of Mining Head MS Venkataramaiah said programmes and webinars were being conducted on behalf of MEAI to impart practical knowledge to mining students.
