New eye drops offer temporary relief from reading glasses
Presbyopia eye drops are emerging as a temporary alternative to reading glasses by improving near vision through pupil constriction. While India launched PresVu last year, the USFDA has now approved VIZZ, a next-generation eye drop that promises clearer near vision for nearly 10 hours

Hyderabad: A few drops in your eyes and you are ready to completely ditch your reading glasses for a few hours. This is no longer a technology of the future, but a reality now.
Last year, a company launched presbyopia eye drops in India that enabled individuals to put a few drops in their eyes and ditch their reading glasses for a few hours. Now, a US-based company has received USFDA approval for its next-generation eye drops that promise freedom from reading glasses for nearly 10 hours.
The evolution of medical technology is now making it possible for individuals to ditch their reading glasses or stop worrying about misplacing them. All they have to do is put a few drops in their eyes, and they will not need reading glasses to read a newspaper or view a computer screen.
The first wave of this unique medical disruption was launched in India last year when the drug regulatory authorities approved the country’s first presbyopia eye drops. PresVu was launched by Mumbai-based Entod Pharmaceuticals. A few days ago, the USFDA approved advanced next-generation drops VIZZ, manufactured by LENZ Therapeutics, boasting an effect lasting nearly 10 hours.
So, how do eye drops work as reading glasses?
Such drops simply trick the eye, as they temporarily shrink the pupil, thus instantly sharpening the depth of focus of the eyes. As a result, nearby objects like smartphone screens or even a book become clearly visible.
Presbyopia eye drops are a relatively new class of prescription medications designed to temporarily improve near vision for people dealing with presbyopia, the natural age-related loss of close-up focusing power that typically affects everyone after the age of 40.
Instead of treating the condition surgically or wearing reading glasses, one can put a drop in the eyes, and it temporarily sharpens the ability to read small print, look at a phone, or work on a laptop.
The impact of presbyopia eye drops is temporary and they cannot replace reading glasses permanently. The presbyopia eye drops belong to a class of drugs called miotics, which are pupil-constricting agents. Such eye drops cause the pupil to temporarily shrink, just like a small pinhole. When light passes through the shrunk pupil, it increases the depth of field. As a result, near and intermediate objects instantly look crisp and clear, but only for a temporary period.
