Mancherial: Contrary to claims by local MLA K Premsagar Rao, the newly created Mancherial Municipal Corporation (MMC) is grappling with multiple challenges.

For instance, the waste generated from the town is being dumped on the outskirts of Andalamma colony causing inconvenience to residents of the locality, due to the absence of a dedicated dry resource collection centre (DRCC) cum dump yard.

The National Green Tribunal instructed officials of the civic body to shift the DRCC to some other place in 2024 after hearing a case filed by an RTI activist.

Officials said that 45 metric tonnes of waste was generated in the town every day. The solid waste was being dumped at the DRCC in two acres of land due to lack of a dumping yard. A plot of four acres was identified on the periphery of Pochampahad village in Hajipur mandal. However, locals expressed objection to the dumping yard, prompting officials to rely on the DRCC.

Similarly, the location of a proposed high-level bridge across Godavari river, between Anthargaon and Mancherial, was shifted to Mulkalla. The estimated cost of the facility rose from Rs.164 crore to Rs 450 crore. However, the bridge continues to remain a distant dream. The travelling distance between Mancherial and Peddapalli towns will be reduced by 25 km once the facility becomes a reality.

Widening of the main road from IB Chowk to Srinivasa Gardens has not commenced so far. The work was sanctioned Rs.78 crore. The stretch sees traffic snarls causing inconvenience to motorists. The town is witnessing rapid urbanization and population is going up by leaps and bounds. Widening of the roads is the need of the hour.

Beautification of Ramuni Cheruvu, taken up in 2022, is dragging on for over four years, irking morning joggers and fitness enthusiasts. The contractor reportedly stalled the project following inordinate delay in sanctioning bills worth Rs1 crore. He is not coming forward to expedite the work following the alleged interference of local MLA who was unhappy with the executing agency for reasons unknown.
