Nizamabad: A teenaged rag-picker turned out to be the prime suspect in the triple murder that took place on the intervening night of December 7 and 8 at a workshop in Nadipally village under the limits of Dichpally police station in Nizamabad district.
Nineteen-year-old Gandham Srikanth alias Ranampalli Mallanna of Gajulapet in the district murdered the trio allegedly to steal their mobile phones and money from them. The same stolen mobile phones helped the police nab Srikanth since he was using them with his SIM card.
Nizamabad Police Commissioner Kartikeya, at a press conference on Sunday, said Srikanth killed Harpal Singh (32) and Joginder Singh (45), harvester mechanics and natives of Punjab and Banoth Sunil (25), a crane operator and native of Sangareddy district, with a hammer.
After the incident, Kartikeya, who visited the crime scene with other officials, formed three special teams to detect the case.
The special teams checked previous offenders list and examined surveillance cameras en route the crime scene. The details of those who were released from jail were also examined. Separate teams were also sent to neighbouring districts to collect details of probable offenders.
As per initial investigation and evidence collected from tahe scene along with mobile phone details, the police concluded that a single offender was responsible for the murder of three persons.
While checking previous offenders list and those who were released from jail, the police picked up Srikanth, who had a criminal background, and grilled him thoroughly. During interrogation, Srikanth admitted that he came to Dichpally on December 7 after consuming liquor. With the intention of stealing money and mobile phones, he entered the workshop and saw Harpal, Joginder and Sunil sleeping in the workshop.
Before stealing the mobile phone of Sunil, Srikanth killed him with a hammer from the workshop. He also went inside the shed where Harpal and Joginder were in deep sleep and murdered them with the same hammer. Later, Srikanth consumed half bottle liquor he found at the workshop and made away with two stolen cell phones and cash.
According to police, Srikanth was a habitual property offender since childhood. Previously, he was involved in eight property offences. He was sent to special home for boys in Gajulararam in Hyderabad for three years in a robbery case registered in Town III police station in the district.
After coming out from the home on October 13, Srikanth was residing at Gajulapeta and doing labour work and rag picking.
