The Construction and Demolition Waste Recycling Plant in Fathullaguda, the second such facility in
Hyderabad, is equipped to recycle 500 metric tonnes of debris a day.
Hyderabad: As part of the exercise to usher in an advanced and environmentally sustainable waste management system, Hyderabad gets a Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste Recycling Plant at Fathullaguda in the city.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has completed the works on the C&D waste recyling plant and the civic body officials said the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao will be inaugurating the new facility on Friday. Education Minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy and Musi Riverfront Development Corporation Chairman and LB Nagar MLA, D Sudheer Reddy, are expected to participate in the inaugural.
To generate wealth out of waste, several initiatives are underway in different parts of the city. The C&D plant in Fathullaguda is one such intervention and the facility is equipped to recycle 500 metric tonnes of debris a day.
After recycling, by-products from the construction and demolition debris waste among other things include metal, sand and silt. These will be put to use in preparing parking tiles, pavement tiles, kerb stones, precast compound walls and interlocking bricks.
This happens to be the second debris recycling plant in the city and a similar facility in Jeedimetla that recycles 500 metric tonnes of waste a day, is already operational. Both the plants are set up in association with Ramky Enviro Engineers Limited. These plants are the first of their kind in Telangana and are among the largest facilities in South India.
According to the GHMC officials, nearly 2,000 metric tonnes of C&D waste is generated in the city every day. Most of this waste usually ends up unauthorisedly dumped on road sides, isolated places and close to water bodies. The civic body officials said the building owners or contractors with demolition waste should contact them (Ph.1800 120 1159 ) for scientific disposal of the same.
“As a tipping fee, an amount of Rs 342 per metric tonne will be charged and if the person transports the waste directly to the plant, Rs 85.50 per metric tonne will be charged,” the official said.
Hyderabad is the fifth city in India after New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Surat and Visakhapatnam to set up the units and the debris at the recycling plant is treated and disposed as per C&D Waste Management Rules using ‘wet processing technology’ to prevent dust pollution.
The GHMC is also planning to establish two more such processing facilities in the city. Around 13.35 lakh metric tonnes of C&D waste has been collected in the city since April 2018 and while around 7.9 metric tonnes was transported to Jeedimetla plant, the remaining was moved to Fathullaguda plant.
