Hyderabad: BRS MLC K Kavitha has urged the Congress government in Telangana to open the locks and formally pay homage to the 125-foot statue of Dr BR Ambedkar at Necklace Road marking his birth anniversary on Sunday. She also demanded the government to allow people to visit the memorial and pay tributes to the architect of the Constitution of India.
Speaking ahead of Ambedkar Jayanti, Kavitha reminded that former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao took the initiative to install the world’s tallest statue of Dr BR Ambedkar to pay homage to his contributions which realised the formation of Telangana. He wanted to dedicate the memorial to the nation to inspire future generations.
“It is not appropriate to disrespect Dr Ambedkar’s legacy just because of political differences with Chandrashekhar Rao,” she remarked.
The BRS leader criticised the Revanth Reddy government for failing to pay respects at the statue last year. Reminding that not even a single garland was offered by the government to Dr Ambedkar, she called upon the Chief Minister and his Cabinet to visit Dr BR Ambedkar’s memorial and pay tributes.
“The statue stands right next to the Secretariat, our administrative centre, and it is a matter of national respect to honour Ambedkar there,” she said.
In a separate event, Kavitha participated in the Vaishaki celebrations at the Ameerpet gurudwara along with MLA Talasani Srinivas Yadav. Welcomed warmly by members of the Sikh community, Kavitha praised Telangana’s spirit of unity and brotherhood. She noted that during BRS rule, land was allocated for the Sikh Foundation and Guru Nanak Jayanti was declared a public holiday.
“Telangana is a shining example of communal harmony. I’m happy to see such vibrant Vaishaki celebrations in Hyderabad,” she added.
