Hyderabad: Canada-headquartered $3.15 billion enterprise information management company OpenText with 15,000 employees globally, sees growth opportunities in cloud offerings, content management and data security to meet the needs of ‘modern work’. The company’s India product development teams, including the one in Hyderabad, are going to contribute significantly, in the future.

The company globally is growing at a rate of 10 per cent year-on-year, while its cloud business which is at $1.17 billion has grown 28-29 per cent year-on-year. OpenText’s information management solutions primarily focus on process, content, data flows and unstructured content (education and other sectors) within an enterprise. There are document solutions for life sciences and specific offerings for the energy sector as well.

Isaac Rajkumar, MD, India and VP-Engineering, OpenText, told Telangana Today, in an exclusive interview, “Of the 15,000 employees globally, we currently have 3,000 people at our Hyderabad and Bengaluru offices, with a 1,500-employee base each. These are two of our largest development centres among the 40 centres globally. Almost 50 per cent of the global product development happens out of India. Biggest contribution to code development (next-gen SaaS application) happens from Hyderabad. Low code capabilities have been built that are content centric. The city team also has strong capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI) and analytics.”

He added, “There are 300 plus engineers working in both campuses focusing on content/document solutions. Web content and digital media management (for companies such as Disney) is taken care of in Hyderabad. We have 100 plus open positions in the city as of today, with the depth and breadth of skill requirements from entry to senior level. We have got a good talent pool in Hyderabad, and don’t see a deliberate need to go to another city for a new centre.”

Two thirds of OpenText’s Indian workforce is engaged in product development, playing a prominent role in building solutions that are deployed by the company globally. A large cloud operations team is being operated out of India.

In terms of dedicated centres of excellence (COEs), Isaac said, “Cloud is a core focus. AI and analytics are other major areas for us. We are also looking to enable API (application programming interface) access into our applications on the cloud, for life sciences, trading or application centric use cases.”

Cloud first

The company, which follows a cloud first approach, believes the return on investment happens faster for clients using cloud. The major demand is coming for cloud, endpoint security, data protection and backup, and analytics & artificial intelligence.

The acquisition of cloud-based subscription data protection, backup, disaster recovery and endpoint security provider Carbonite during 2019-end, has enabled the company’s offerings to small and medium businesses. OpenText has seen a historical mix of organic and inorganic (including divisions/units of Dell, GE and HP) growth, he added.

OpenText is also seeing a spurt in its cloud subscription services with cloud services and subscription revenues growing at 41.1 per cent year-over-year to $350.5 million. Post the pandemic, companies are rethinking their approach to both business and technology.

“Today, employees are distributed because of remote working. This has enhanced the importance of endpoint security of devices. For digital investigations, we have a solution. We offer a centralised backup cloud solution that is key in rapidly growing digitalisation. Digital signature of documents is another area, where we have offerings. We also provide risk assessment. Cloud is central to everything- be it content or application,” he informed.

Ties in Hyderabad

OpenText works closely with the Indian School of Business (ISB) for its executive education programmes for senior managers and product management hiring. Over the years, the company has been able to tap into the talent base extensively and the R&D ecosystem.

“The company has a six-month internship programme accepting about 300 candidates from regional engineering colleges from Telangana, AP and Karnataka, of which a third of the interns get converted into full-time employees. We are also getting a good chunk of product managers from the ISB,” he informed.

The company has also carried out a funded research along with IIIT-Hyderabad focusing on table detection in a document, through automation.

India market

Isaac said, “India is a market for us. We have sales and partner development teams that focus on the India market. We have hundreds of enterprise software customers in the country as well as thousands of small and medium businesses, for whom we cater the data security and backup solutions.”
