Hyderabad: In 2002, the General Assembly decided to observe the International Day of Peace on September 21 every year. It was established to promote global ceasefire and non-violence.
It called on all member States, organizations and individuals of the United Nations system to commemorate the day in a manner that is appropriate and public awareness. The International Day of Peace was established in 1981. It was initially set as the date of the opening of the September 1982 UN General Assembly.
Peace is a common desire shared by all. The founding of the United Nations was an example of this universal desire. Keeping the peace and developing friendly relations among nations are among the main objectives of the United Nations.
Peace was and always is an option. It is about transforming our societies and uniting our global community to work together for a more peaceful, just and sustainable world for all. The most common way of commemorating the day is by observing a moment of silence.
In many countries, local civic groups and schools hold special events and ceremonies. The true meaning of the day lies in the participation of people around the world, gathering to think about the meaning of peace and their commitment to its realisation.
The 2021 theme for the International Day of Peace is “Recovering better for an equitable and sustainable world”. So let’s Celebrate peace by standing up against acts of hate online and offline, and by spreading compassion, kindness, and hope in the face of the pandemic, and as we recover as “Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.”
