Hyderabad: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals India (PETA India) and Stray Animal Foundation of India (SAFI), with the help of a local resident, collaborated with Kovur Police Station, Nellore, to file an FIR against individuals who allegedly attacked a community dog.
According to PETA, three men first beat the dog with long sticks on June 29 and later on July 1, returned with two others and again beat the dog, resulting in its death.
Following a complaint submitted by a local resident, an FIR has been registered against the accused under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with Sections 11(1)(a) and 11(1)(l) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960.
Killing or maiming an animal is a cognisable offence punishable with imprisonment which may extend to five years, or with a fine, or both, PETA said.
“People who are cruel to animals often move on to other animals and human victims. For everyone’s safety, it’s imperative that members of the public report cruelty to animals such as this one to the police,” PETA India Cruelty Response Assistant Vamsi Krishna said.
