Medak: The earth bund of Pocharam reservoir began eroding on Wednesday afternoon following heavy and unprecedented rains in the region.
The reservoir, built across Alari Vagu, a tributary of the Manjeera, between Kamareddy and Medak districts, has been receiving more than 1.31 lakh cusecs of inflows from upstream. The floodwaters were flowing 2.5 feet above the dam’s weir.
With water gushing sideways due to the heavy influx, erosion started on the earth bund adjacent to the dam. Irrigation authorities immediately began placing sandbags to protect the structure.
Officials warned that a breach in the reservoir could spell disaster, as several habitations are located downstream along the course of the stream. The project has a storage capacity of 1.82 TMC ft.
