Khammam: An FIR was registered at the One Town police station here against Assistant Professor Dr. Gulam Rahman Shareef of Khammam Government Medical College in connection with an alleged incident of ragging in the college. He was accused of tonsuring the head of an MBBS first year student of the college.
Khammam One-Town Inspector of Police Uday Kumar registered the case based on a complaint of the aggrieved student. Dr. Shareef was booked under Section 4(i) of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act-1989, Prohibition of Ragging Act-1997, Section 133 (using criminal force or assaulting someone with the intent to dishonour) and Section 352 (insulting someone to provoke a breach of the peace) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
It might be recalled the student from Mulugu of the erstwhile Warangal district was allegedly mocked by senior students many times because of his odd hairstyle and they told him to change it. Under pressure from the seniors, he trimmed his hair and the issue came to the notice of Dr. Shareef, who served as medical officer and in-charge of the hostel anti-ragging committee. However, instead of reprimanding the seniors, he took the student to a hair salon and tonsured his head.
Medical College Principal Dr. S Rajeswara Rao, speaking to the media on Monday, said that in addition to the complaint by the student to the police, he also lodged a complaint to Commissioner of Police Sunil Dutt regarding the incident. Dr. Shareef would be suspended from services after the three-member committee constituted to probe into the incident submits its report. The assistant professor in question should have informed the college Principal or the hostel warden about the issue, but he acted arbitrarily and that was a mistake committed by him, Dr. Rajeswara Rao noted.
After the news about the incident went viral, Minister of Medical Affairs Damodar Raja Narasimha took the issue seriously and directed officials to submit a detailed report on the incident.
