Rainfall batters Hyderabad; parts of city choke under 120 mm downpour
A powerful thunderstorm on Thursday evening dumped over 100 mm of rain in several parts of Hyderabad, crippling traffic and flooding roads. Core areas like Ameerpet, Punjagutta, and Gachibowli were hit hardest as rush hour came to a grinding halt
Hyderabad: A sudden and intense thunderstorm on Thursday evening dumped over 100 mm of rainfall across multiple locations in Hyderabad, Rangareddy, and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts, severely disrupting normal life and bringing rush hour traffic to a grinding halt.
The torrential downpour came just two days after a similar thunderstorm struck the city on Monday. The rains led to waterlogging and flooding in many core areas of Hyderabad, including Ameerpet, Somajiguda, Punjagutta, Madhapur, Gachibowli, Manikonda, and the Kukatpally-KPHB corridor.
Traffic was brought to a complete standstill across major junctions as thoroughfares turned into water channels. Knee-deep water was reported in several low-lying areas, leaving commuters stranded and forcing residents to wait out the storm indoors.
Although the IMD has not officially declared it a cloudburst, several weather-tracking accounts on social media described the event as one, citing the intensity and scale of the rainfall across Hyderabad and its suburbs.
According to official data as of 8 pm Thursday, the highest rainfall in GHMC areas was recorded at: Khajaguda Sports Complex in Gachibowli, Serilingampally (123.5 mm), Srinagar colony in Khairatabad (111.3 mm), CESS in Khairatabad (108.5 mm), Saroornagar (106 mm), Yousufguda Khairatabad (104 mm), GHMC zonal office in Uppal (95.5 mm), LB Nagar (93 mm), Banjara Hills Shaikpet (90.5 mm), Nagole (Uppal) 85.5, Bandlaguda (Uppal) (83.3 mm), Golconda (79.5 mm).
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) disaster response teams were pressed into action to clear waterlogging and help ease traffic bottlenecks.
