Hyderabad: Chief Conservator of Forests (Wild Life) and Chief Wildlife Warden R Shobha has directed individuals, organisations, institutions, resort owners etc,. who have exotic live animals as pets to voluntarily disclose the details and register them.
To regulate their possession, breeding and trade, the Government of India issued an advisory on July 2 to Chief Wildlife Wardens of all the States and Union Territories to register such animals. Six months’ time was given for voluntary disclosure which ends on December 2, 2020, and such animals must be registered by December 15. All those who are registering during this period will not be required to produce documents relating to imported live animals in their possession.
Apart from this, there are instances of individuals, shops, and business houses breeding exotic live animals and selling them in the market. Since exotic animals are not listed in any of the schedules of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, Forest Departments in all the States and UTs are not in a position to monitor the possession or sale of exotic live animals.
The registration of imported live animals should be done online in the PARIVESH website of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, in the prescribed format. Once the applications are uploaded, the Forest Department will verify the animals and issue registrations against the name and address of the applicant, as per the eligibility, by December 15.
