Hyderabad: Amid much fanfare, Malkajgiri MP A Revanth Reddy took charge as the new Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president at Gandhi Bhavan here on Wednesday.
The AICC Telangana in-charge Manickam Tagore, former PCC chief Ponnala Lakshmaiah and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, outgoing TPCC president N Uttam Kumar Reddy and others were present at the ceremony.
Addressing party activists after taking charge, Revanth Reddy sought cooperation of everyone in the party like ‘vanara sena’, who supported Lord Rama. “A few friends are suggesting me to seek guidance of political strategist Prashant Kishore (PK). But every activist in Congress is a PK,” he said.
“Do we need Prashant Kishore when we have so many PKs?” he asked party activists. When a group of activists raised slogans hailing him, Revanth Reddy reprimanded them saying he would not tolerate hailing individuals and if necessary he would suspend them.
“I will not tolerate hailing individuals except Congress president Sonia Gandhi and party leader Rahul Gandhi,” he said, advising that such behavior would affect the party’s image. Revanth Reddy said he was taking up the responsibility of leading the party in the State with the blessings of Lord Sri Lakshminarasimha Swamy and Goddesses Sri Yellamma and Pochamma, apart from Sonia Gandhi. Contrary to the established practices of inviting all the senior leaders on the dais, all the senior Congress leaders were made to sit off the dais and only a handful of them were allowed to speak.
AICC general secretary Tariq Anwar, newly appointed PCC working presidents Mohammad Azharuddin, J Geetha Reddy and others were also present.
Case booked against Revanth for rally
The city police booked a case against TPCC president A Revanth Reddy, former MP M Anjan Kumar Yadav and others for taking out rallies without permission.
The Congress leaders organised two separate rallies which culminated at Nampally before heading towards Gandhi Bhavan in connection with swearing in of Revanth Reddy as PCC chief on Wednesday. As the rallies were organised without permission resulting in traffic disruption, the police registered the case under various provisions of Indian Penal Code (IPC) along with the Disaster Management Act.
