Hyderabad: Urologists at Hyderabad-based Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG) on Friday announced successful robotic partial nephrectomy on a 45-year-old woman with chronic liver disease (CLD), which involved removal of a part of the kidney with tumor, instead of removing the entire kidney.

The patient was admitted to the hospital with right flank pain, persistent fatigue, and generalized weakness. Tests revealed a cancerous tumor in the right kidney, Dr. Bipin Chandra Pal, Director and Head, Urology and Renal Transplantation, AIG Hospitals, who led the surgery said.

“The conventional abdominal laparoscopic or robotic route was ruled out due to ascitic fluid, fragile liver, and risk to surrounding intestinal structures. In the retroperitoneal approach, however, we reach the kidney from the side of the body, without entering the main abdominal cavity. Using advanced robotic systems, we carefully operated in this confined area and successfully removed the tumor while protecting the nearby organs,” Dr. Bipin Chandra said, adding that this was for the first time that such a procedure was done successfully in the two-Telugu speaking States.

Post-surgery, the patient experienced minimal pain, no complications, and was discharged within 48 hours. Renal function was preserved, and the pathology confirmed complete tumor removal, Dr. Mithun Sharma, Head, Hepatology, added.
